Lençóis Maranhenses and
Scarlet Ibises

The 2. goal of my Brazilian roadtrip started in São Luís, the capital of the federal state of Maranhão. Just a short city walk to get a rough impression and off we went to Santo Amaro, the gate to the "Sheets of Maranhão". We did a first jeep tour in the late afternoon to get an impression of the 1500 sq km of white dunes and turquoise lagoons.

Although I had seen plenty of photos while planning this trip this sight was way beyond imagination - sand and dunes as far as the eye could see...

We spent another two days driving and hiking in the dunes and taking photos of this picturesque landscape. Once in a while our way led us right through one of the chrystal clear lagoons and we had to carry our photo bags above our heads - what a nice refreshment 😅.

After the transfer to Barreirinhas further south we had the opportunity to do a scenic flight and to make some aerials of this spectacular region. The following day our guide surprised us with a long hiking tour and a very welcome coffee break and siesta in a fishermen's village. Another transfer to Atins where we did a  tour into the "pequenos" = "small" dunes of Maranhão to take some last pictures of sand structures, dunes and lagoons.

3.Goal: The "Revoada dos Guarás" or "Flight of the Scarlet Ibises"

After the transfer to Tutoia we had a little time to relax before we did a first boat trip to the Parnaiba Delta.  Every evening, just before sunset, up to 3000 Scarlet Ibises return to the tiny island "Ilha dos Guarás" to spend the night together. The Scarlet Ibis loves company and living in big groups. They have a fantastic  color, a vibrant red, that comes from their diet which consists mainly of  crabs and crustaceans. It's quite a show to watch the flocks arrive in V-formations and the trees turn bright red with the innumerable birds. - Another morning to relax until our pickup for another impressive visit of the Scarlet Ibises.

The last few days of our trip we traveled slowly south towards Fortaleza with stopovers in Camocim and Jericoacoara. We used boats, ferries, jeeps and a buggy and enjoyed some lazy days on the beaches and of course piles of exotic fruit for breakfast  and the Brazilian cult drink , the tasty Caipirinha until it was time time to catch the plane in Fortaleza to return home via São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
